Unpopular opinion: the book club pick I hated at page 50 in Denver turned out to be the best one we read
Everyone in my Denver club voted it down 7 to 2 at the first meeting because the first chapter drags. I pushed us to finish it anyway and by the last 40 pages the two people who hated it most were the ones arguing loudest. Anyone else been in a club that quits books too fast?
Sounds like your club just got lucky this time. Most books that drag for 50 pages keep dragging, and making everyone suffer through 300 more pages usually ends with nobody finishing and everyone annoyed. Quitting fast isn't a flaw, it's how you avoid wasting a month on a dud.
