Vent: Our club in Portland voted 'The Great Gatsby' shallow, but I think they missed the point
We were at the community center last Tuesday, and after a 20 minute discussion, the group decided the characters were just rich people with boring problems. I argued that Fitzgerald was showing the emptiness behind the glamour, not celebrating it, but they just moved on to pick the next book. Has anyone else had to defend a classic that their club dismissed too quickly?

Simple kids' book" for To Kill a Mockingbird? That's wild.

My old book club in Seattle did the same thing with To Kill a Mockingbird. They called it a simple kids' book and voted it down in ten minutes. Honestly, it felt like they just wanted to read the latest thriller and not talk about anything deeper. I ended up leaving that group because it kept happening.
