The $85 "luxury" journal that fell apart in 2 weeks

I dropped $85 on one of those fancy leather journals with the thick handmade paper and the stitched binding. Looked amazing in the pics, felt great in my hand when it showed up. But the paper bled through with my regular gel pen, not even a heavy marker. By day 10 the spine cracked and pages started falling out loose. I went back to my trusty $12 dotted notebook from the office supply store and it's still going strong 4 months later. Anyone else get burned by a pretty cover that can't hold up to daily use? What's the best budget notebook you've found that actually survives a full year?
