Warning: wasted $45 on a 'waterproof' journal that bled everywhere

I got this fancy journal from a local shop in Austin that said it was waterproof with thick pages. Took it out on a hike last week, got caught in light rain, and the ink smudged across three spreads. Total loss of $45 and two weeks of tracking. Anyone else fall for a fancy label on a notebook?

Bought one of those "field notes" waterproof editions a few years back and treated myself like I was some big shot outdoorsman on a survival mission. Took it on a day trip to Zilker Park, sat on a damp bench for 5 minutes, and the cover turned into a wavy, sad mess that looked like it went through a washing machine. I'm pretty sure a paper towel soaked in spit would hold up better than that thing did. Now I just grab the cheap composition notebooks from HEB and shove em in a ziploc bag like everyone else, feels a lot less painful when I inevitably spill coffee on em. At least my dignity only cost me $3.50 that time instead of $45.

Totally been there! Spent $35 on one that claimed to be "all-weather" and the cover literally peeled off after one afternoon in my bag with a water bottle. Now I just use a cheap spiral notebook and a ziploc bag if I'm going outside.

Yeah but field notes actually makes a pretty solid product in my experience though, maybe that was a fake or something? @the_lucas I think your cover peeling off might have been from the heat more than anything, the glue in those all-weather notebooks can't handle a hot car. It's a bummer that a simple ziploc bag still outlasts all this fancy stuff we buy.
