A client in Cincinnati insisted on using their own paint and it peeled in a week

We were finishing a kitchen remodel and the homeowner brought in a can of cheap paint they bought online, saying it was 'just as good' as the pro-grade stuff I quoted. After we applied it, the whole job started peeling off the new drywall within seven days because the paint couldn't stick right. Has anyone else had a client supply bad materials and how did you handle the redo talk?

That Cincinnati job needed a proper primer first.

Did you have it in your contract that you weren't responsible for client-supplied materials failing? I always make sure that clause is bold.

Tbh I would've just told them the paint was garbage and walked away, but I'm too broke to turn down work that's already started. @jennybailey is right about the primer thing - that's where I messed up too, thinking the paint might magically bond if I just slapped it on thick enough. Had a client once bring in stuff from the dollar store for a bathroom ceiling, and I ended up scraping it off with my bare hands while they watched from the couch muttering about how it looked fine to them. Now I just nod and say "sure thing boss" while mentally calculating how much of my dignity I'm giving up per hour.
