A retired contractor told me to get every change order in writing, I ignored him and ate $900

Last spring in Austin, a buddy who did renovations for 30 years warned me about a homeowner who kept adding stuff verbally. I figured we had a good rapport, no need for paper. Fast forward 3 weeks, she claimed she never asked for the extra shelving or the upgraded trim. No texts, no emails, just her word against mine. Took me 6 phone calls and a tense meeting to get half of what I was owed. She still left me a 2 star review saying I overcharged. That old guy was right, and I feel stupid for not listening. Has anyone had a client straight up lie about verbal agreements like that?

Did you catch that study about how verbal deals fail half the time?
