Had to pick between a big commercial account and my sanity last month

I do pest control for houses and small businesses mostly, but last month I got approached by a property management company in Phoenix that manages like 40 units. The money was good, $4,000 a month, but they wanted me on call 24/7 for emergencies. I ended up turning them down after thinking about it for 3 days because I know from past experience those types always burn you out with late night calls. Instead I stuck with my regular residential clients and made $3,200 that month with way less stress. Has anyone else had to walk away from a big payday for peace of mind?

Nah, you passed up $800 more a month, that's real money you could've banked.

That extra $800 might sound nice on paper but you have to look at the whole picture. More money almost always means more headaches more responsibility and way more stress at a job where they expect you to be on call or work weekends. There is something to be said for a job that lets you leave work at work and actually have a life outside of it. Plus that higher salary might bump you into a higher tax bracket where you end up taking home way less than you thought you would. At the end of the day peace of mind and free time are worth something too, not just the number on your paycheck.

Good for you honestly. That kind of money isn't worth losing sleep over.
