My old boss in Cincinnati said never do free samples for a big client, he was dead wrong
Honestly I thought Greg was being paranoid when he told me in 2019 to never give a big company free work just to get in the door. He ran a print shop and said a free job for a 500 person firm always turns into more free jobs, but I tried it anyway with a design client. They paid for the first batch after the sample, then asked for 3 more rounds of spec work and went quiet. Anyone else had the sample thing go the other way, or is Greg just right every time?
I read a thing from a freelance writer who tracked this and said most unpaid "test" projects never turn into paid work. Greg was right, and honestly the numbers back him up.
