My old boss said never discount your rate to win a job, and I lost a $6k website build because I ignored him
Back in March a bakery owner in Fort Worth wanted a full site rebuild and asked if I could knock 30% off to fit her budget. My old boss always told me never to drop my rate because people who haggle never stop haggling, and I brushed him off and gave her the discount anyway. Two weeks in she wanted unlimited revisions, weekly calls, and a blog she never mentioned, then threatened to leave a bad review when I said that was out of scope. I ended up refunding her deposit just to make her go away and ate about three weeks of work. So was he right, or is there a way to discount without opening that door?

Did she ever push back on the original price before you offered the discount, or did you just volunteer it when she mentioned her budget?
