The client who wanted me to rewire his ENTIRE house for $500 flat
I had a guy call me last Tuesday after I quoted him $4,200 for a full rewire on his 3 bedroom in Phoenix. He LAUGHED and said he could get it done for $500 because his cousin's friend knows a guy. Then he called back an hour later after that guy said it would be $3,800. He actually asked if I could match the $500. I said no and he yelled at me for 5 minutes about how electricians are all crooks. Has anyone else had a client invent a fake cheap quote just to haggle you down?

Wait, he actually yelled at you for five minutes over the phone because you wouldn't match a fake $500 quote from some random guy he knows? That's not just a customer, that's a whole circus act right there. I've had people pull similar stuff before, like the guy who claimed he could get a roof done for a case of beer, but five minutes of screaming at me for saying no would've been my last straw. How exactly did he think $500 covers the permits, the wire, the breakers, and your time running new circuits through an entire 3-bedroom house in Phoenix heat? Sounds like he was trying to gaslight you into working for free.

Nah you're spot on for the most part @jamesc79, but I gotta gently correct something. He didn't yell for the full five minutes straight. It was more like three minutes of ranting, then two minutes of him trying to guilt trip me by saying I don't care about the community. Like somehow running a business means I'm supposed to lose money to prove I'm a good guy. And yeah, that roof for a case of beer story is wild, never heard that one before. But honestly, the whole $500 thing completely ignores that materials alone for that house would be closer to $400 or more, plus permits and my time. So he basically wanted me to show up for free and maybe hand him a twenty.
