Took a fixed $2,500 for a website rebuild instead of $65 an hour, and I'm still kicking myself
So a guy I know from my old job hit me up in January to redo his landscaping company site. He gave me two ways to bill it: a flat $2,500 for the full rebuild, or $65 an hour with no cap. I picked the flat fee because I wanted the sure thing and figured it would take me maybe 40 hours. It took 95. Every time I sent him a draft he'd call me and say his wife wanted the green darker, or his nephew thought the contact form should be on every page, or he wanted a blog even though he never writes. By the end I was making around $26 an hour and dreading his name popping up on my phone. The worst part is he paid on time and was nice the entire time, so I can't even be mad at him. I just made a bad call on my own. Has anyone here found a good rule for when to take a flat rate over hourly? I keep getting this wrong.
