Client fired me over a $75 rush fee and came crawling back 11 days later
I charged a $75 rush fee on a Tuesday print job because the client wanted it next morning, and she called me greedy and took her business elsewhere. Eleven days later she called back saying the new shop lost her files twice and missed her event date, so I quoted her the full price plus the rush fee again. Do you guys hold the line when a client walks and wants to come back, or do you let the fee slide to keep the peace?
Taking the client back at full price plus the rush fee is the right move, but I would go one step past that. Make her pay upfront this time, or at least half down. She already showed you how she handles things when she does not get her way, so why give her the same open tab? If she balks at that, you just learned she is not worth the headache anyway. The lost files and missed date were her problem, not yours, and she knew it when she called back. Holding the line is not greedy, it is just not letting someone train you to eat the cost of their bad choices.
