Overheard a shop owner in Reno say he fires one bad client every 6 months on purpose, just to stay sane
Part of me thinks that's crazy to walk away from money, but part of me thinks he's onto something and I want to know where everyone else lands on dumping a paying customer who makes your whole week worse?
That line about firing one bad client every 6 months "just to stay sane" hits hard. I had a client who called me at 11pm about nothing, argued every invoice, and made me dread opening my email. I finally told her I could not take her work anymore and she flipped out, but my sleep got better within a week. The trick is doing it nice but firm: finish any paid work, give a short note like "my schedule no longer fits this project," and do not explain or apologize a bunch. Then put that time into the good clients who actually pay on time and treat you like a person. Losing one check hurts for a month, but keeping a soul-sucking client hurts for years.
