Saw a discussion about flat rates vs hourly for consulting work

I was reading a thread where someone claimed flat rates kill profit while another said hourly kills trust, but which one actually works better when you have clients who nickel and dime every revision?

Does flat rate ever actually work or is it just a trap for nice people?

Actually, I recently had a client who wanted to do flat rate for a 12 week branding project. They insisted on $4,000 total. I agreed because I thought the scope was clear. But then they ended up requesting 8 complete logo rewrites and three full round of copy changes. I lost money on that deal, probably around $2,000 in extra time. Flat rates can really backfire if you don't have bulletproof boundaries.
