Warning: a client's 30 minute feedback call exposed my weak spots

I had a project wrap up last month and the PM scheduled a feedback call without telling me it was a review of how I handled things. They said my updates were too vague and that I only reached out when something broke. They asked for check-ins every 2 days with a simple status line, even if nothing changed. I thought I was doing fine by not bothering them. That call cost me about 45 minutes of my evening but it changed how I run all my current gigs. Now I send a short daily note, like “all good here” or “waiting on asset from their side.” Has anyone else had a client criticize your communication style after the fact instead of during the project? How do you handle it when the feedback comes too late to fix that specific job?

“All good here” is basically my love language at this point, so I feel your pain, I once had a client mad I didn't tell them about a delay that only existed in my own head.
