Came across a stat about how many contractors don't write contracts
Was reading through a small business forum last night and saw a study saying 40% of independent contractors don't use written agreements. Had a client last month try to back out of paying me for extra work I did outside the original verbal scope. How do you guys handle getting people to sign off without making it feel like you don't trust them?

Start making them sign a simple one-pager before any work begins.

Is anyone else worried that a one-pager might miss the important details, @caseywalker? I've seen those quick agreements cause more confusion later when expectations don't match up.

Honestly, I used to think a one-pager was too simple and would miss the details like the_rowan mentioned. But after a few jobs where we didn't have anything in writing, I changed my mind completely. A short agreement is better than a verbal handshake for covering your bases, your mileage may vary but it's worked for me.
