Found out the average freelancer waits 74 days to get paid, and my own invoice just proved it
I was reading a small business blog during lunch and it said the typical freelancer waits around 74 days past due to get their money. I checked my own spreadsheet and my worst one sat open for 91 days before a check showed up. That was a $3,200 logo job for a gym in Mesa, Arizona. The kicker is they kept posting new equipment on their shop page while telling me accounting was backed up. Do you send a late fee at 30 days or just stop taking their calls?
Adding a late fee at 30 days just gives them a reason to sit on it longer, since now they're mad about the extra charge on top of the original bill. Keep in mind that gym probably runs on razor thin margins and a slow bookkeeper who cuts checks twice a month, so 91 days might be plain disorganization and not them trying to stiff you. Posting new equipment just means the owner is spending on the business, not that he's holding your $3,200 hostage on purpose. Sending a fee or going silent both kill the relationship over what could be one lazy office manager.
