I used to fire customers who haggled, now I give them a menu with prices on it
For years my rule was simple: if somebody pushed back on my price, I walked, because cheap people make cheap problems. A guy in Bend called me out on that after I quoted him $1,400 to rewire a garage and he wanted to talk it down to $900. Instead of hanging up, I mailed him a one page list: $175 per outlet, $325 per breaker run, $90 to come look at it. He picked three items off the list, paid a deposit that same day, and I never had to argue once. Two other people did the same thing that month, and one of them added a ceiling fan job later. The menu killed the haggling because there was nothing left to haggle over, the prices were just sitting there in ink. I still turn down jerks, but now pushing back on price doesn't make you a jerk, it just means you want fewer items. Has anyone else tried handing out a flat price sheet instead of quoting each job by feel?
