My cheap logo vs $500 custom logo showdown... what a joke that was

I compared a $35 Fiverr logo to a $500 local designer last spring for a client's bakery in Portland. The cheap one took 2 days but looked like clip art from 2005, all blurry and mismatched colors. The $500 one took 3 weeks with 4 revisions, but the client got a vector file that worked on everything from signs to business cards. The difference was night and day... the cheap one actually lost me a small contract because the client said it looked unprofessional. Has anyone else had a freelance gig go south from skimping on design costs?

The real cost nobody talks about is the lost time on the backend. When a client gets a cheap logo, you end up spending hours trying to fix it or making excuses to the client instead of doing actual paying work. I had a gig where someone brought me a $20 logo and I spent more time trying to unbend the JPEG into a usable file than it would have taken to build one from scratch. That $500 option saves you the headache of playing damage control later.

Has anyone looked at how a cheap logo can actually hurt your reputation with other designers too? Because I've seen it happen.
