Rant: talked myself out of a $600 deposit on a garage conversion, then the guy turned out to be solid
Had a homeowner in Lansing hit me up about turning his detached garage into a man cave, and my first instinct was to run. He wanted to pay half up front in cash and kept saying stuff like "my buddy did his own wiring, how hard can it be," which usually means trouble. I almost walked because I've been burned by the cash deposit guys before (one guy in Flint stiffed me $250 on a fence job and then acted like I was the crazy one). Against my gut I took it, and this guy ended up being the easiest client I've had in two years. He Venmoed the $600 the same night, never once hovered over my shoulder, and even brought me a coffee on the third day without me asking. The wiring thing scared me but he actually hired a licensed electrician for that part and just wanted me for the framing and drywall. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I misjudged him because of the cash talk, or if I got lucky. How do you all size up a client in the first five minutes without letting old bad jobs cloud your read?
