Spent 6 months sending PDF invoices before I realized they were going to spam

I was wondering why this one landscaping client kept saying they never got my invoice. Turns out my email signature had a link to my portfolio and Gmail was flagging everything as promotional. I switched to a plain text invoice with no images and suddenly 3 overdue clients paid within a week. Has anyone else had their perfectly normal emails end up in the junk folder for no obvious reason?

My domain was blacklisted too because of a shared hosting neighbor selling viagra.

and the thing is, gmail is super aggressive with that stuff. i had this same issue with my music teaching newsletter i send to parents. i tried everything to fix it, even went through google's whole "fix your sender reputation" thing which was a total waste of time. turns out my domain was blacklisted because someone on the same shared hosting as me was spamming. i switched to a custom domain with a dedicated IP and now it goes to inbox every time. but honestly the real hack is just sending plain text with no links at first, then follow up with the fancy version once they reply. works every time.
