Update: The guy who wanted a whole new deck design after we poured the footings
We were three days into a job in Akron, concrete was set, and the homeowner walks out with a magazine. He points to a picture and says 'I want it to look like this instead.' The new plan needed different posts and framing, so I had to stop work and write up a whole new quote. Has anyone else had a client change their mind after you already started building?

Homeowners have the right to change their mind, it's your job to manage the process and get paid for the extra work.

Yeah but Sandra_moore30, that right comes with the duty to pay for the changes. Managing the process is one thing, but constant mind changing is just bad planning. It burns out good contractors who then just add a huge pain fee.

My buddy's reno contract now has a 15% fee for any change after week two.

Hold on, that's just not how it works. After the concrete is poured, you're way past the time for big idea changes. That's not managing a process, that's wasting everyone's time and money. A good plan stops this stuff. Changing your mind then means paying to tear out finished work, which is a totally different and way more expensive job. It shows a basic lack of respect for the work already done.
