Got burned by a 30-day termination clause in a rental addendum

So I signed a storage unit lease back in March at a place near Columbus, and the addendum had a clause saying either side could terminate with 30 days written notice. Sounded fine at first, right? Then last week I found out they locked me into a full 12-month term in the main contract while the addendum only applied to the month-to-month option, which I never picked. I moved my stuff out on day 29 of my notice but they hit me with a $450 early termination fee plus the next month's rent because the clock started when they processed the paperwork, not when I sent the email. Has anyone else had a sneaky addendum that contradicts the main agreement like this? What language do you ask for to stop the double standard?
