My gym made me sign a 6 month deal with a 30 day notice clause and I'm done fighting it
So I signed up at a gym here in Amarillo back in March and the contract had this tiny line about a 30 day written notice to cancel. I ignored it because everybody says these gym contracts are a joke and you can just walk away. Well, I lost my job hauling in May and moved two hours away, so I called to cancel and they said I owed them $389 for the rest of the term plus a $50 fee. Everyone on here keeps saying just call your bank and block the charges, but that is a good way to get sent to collections and wreck your credit. I read the whole thing again and it turns out the notice has to be mailed certified, not emailed, which is buried in paragraph 9. I sent it certified on a Tuesday, kept the receipt, and they still drafted me again the next month anyway. Has anyone actually gotten a gym to honor that written notice clause without a lawyer, or am I stuck paying this one out?

Wait, they still drafted you after you sent the certified letter? That is wild but also kinda on brand for gyms, the only thing they lift is money out of your account. My cousin went through the same thing in Lubbock and what finally worked was mailing the certified letter AND disputing the draft with her bank as unauthorized, not as a stop payment, since she had proof they got the notice. Keep that green card receipt, that thing is your golden ticket because it shows the date they signed for it. If the bank gives you any pushback, ask for the dispute in writing and mention you will file a complaint with the Texas attorney general, gyms hate that word. Sorry I do not have better news, but you did it the right way, do not let them scare you into paying.
