My subcontractor added a non-compete clause to his contract

Last month a framer I've used for 5 years slipped a 2 year non-compete into his renewal that would ban me from hiring any other framing crew in the county. I called him on it and he said it's standard - has anyone else run into subs trying to lock you into exclusive deals like this?

Did he throw in a pinky promise and a blood oath too? That's not standard, that's a joke. Sounds like he was hoping you'd just sign without reading.

Yeah, that whole thing sounds SUPER sketchy. Glad you caught it.

Caught me off guard too when a drywall sub tried pulling something similar last year. I felt like an idiot because I almost signed it without reading the fine print. @thomas.river nailed it, sketchy as hell and definitely not standard practice. Makes you wonder if they're just testing how much they can get away with.
