Put a 14-day cancellation clause in a $3k website build and the client backed out on day 12
I was sitting at a coffee shop in Portland last month when I got the email. Client said they found someone cheaper. I had already built half the site. My contract had a 14-day cancellation window I thought was standard. Now I change every contract to have a non-refundable deposit clause instead. What do you guys put in for early termination fees?

Yeah that 14-day window is way too generous for a $3k project. I always use a 50% non-refundable deposit upfront now, and that covers my time even if they bail. Learned that lesson the hard way too.

What if the real problem isn't the refund policy but how we vet clients upfront? A simple discovery call can weed out the tire-kickers before you even send a proposal. Saves you from ever needing that deposit in the first place.

Did you actually see a drop in sales after adding that extra screening step?
