Showerthought: I almost skipped the $150 review of my first freelance contract in Dallas, and the one line my cousin caught saved me
Six weeks ago I got a $2,400 gig from a small shop in Dallas and was about to sign it as is because the money was good and I did not want to look clueless. My cousin who does office work looked at page 3 for ten minutes and pointed out a line that let them change the scope any time for no extra pay, so I asked for a cap on revisions and they actually agreed. Has anyone else had a cheap or free review catch something that would have wrecked the job?
What did the scope change line actually say? Like was it worded as "client may adjust deliverables as needed" or was it some vague thing about "project may evolve based on business needs"? I ask because the sneaky ones are never that obvious. They hide behind normal sounding words that seem fine until you realize there is no limit and no extra pay on the back end. Also, when you pushed back on the revision cap, did they make you give up anything else to get it, like a lower rate or a longer deadline?
