Showerthought: My sister's divorce lawyer pointed out a sneaky clause in her house sale contract
We were talking over coffee yesterday and she said her lawyer flagged a line about 'future improvements' that would have let the buyer claim rights to any work she did after closing. It was buried in a paragraph about property condition. I've been staring at my own work contracts all afternoon now, looking for that kind of hidden trap. Has anyone else found a clause that gave away way more than it seemed to at first glance?

Wow, that's scary. My buddy almost signed a work contract that said any idea he had at home on his own computer still belonged to the company. Honestly, it was hidden in a part about company equipment.

My apartment lease had a line about "routine maintenance" that gave the landlord a key to my unit anytime without notice. It took my cousin, who's a property manager, to point out how broad that term really was. Now I read every line twice.

Used to think those clauses were no big deal. Now I check every line after hearing similar stories.

@ray613 I get that some people get burned by fine print, but honestly this sounds like one of those things that gets blown out of proportion. Landlords have to do maintenance, and most of them aren't just letting themselves in to snoop around. A buddy of mine had a similar clause in his lease for years and never once had an issue. It's smart to be careful, but acting like every broad term is a trap is just paranoid.
