Showerthought: paid a lawyer $450 to read my gym contract and she found a clause that let them charge me for quitting
I signed up at a gym near my place in Denver back in March and the guy at the desk kept rushing me through the paperwork, saying it was all standard stuff and pointing at where to sign with his pen. I almost just signed it because who actually reads a gym contract, right? But my sister kept nagging me so I paid a contract lawyer $450 to look it over, which felt dumb at the time since that cost more than two months of membership. She found a line buried in section 7 that said I owed the full remaining balance of my 12 month term if I ever tried to cancel early, no matter the reason, even if I moved or got hurt. There was also a bit about them being allowed to raise the monthly rate with only 10 days notice and I could not leave without paying that same fee. The lawyer wrote them a short letter and suddenly they were fine with month to month with a 30 day out, so that $450 saved me around $600 plus who knows how much in surprise hikes. Has anyone here had a gym or lease pull that move where the escape clause costs you everything?
