Coworking spaces vs coffee shops - which actually helped me focus more?

I spent 6 months bouncing between coffee shops in Lisbon and then 6 months at a proper coworking space in Bali. In Lisbon, I got through 3 client projects but kept getting distracted by the noise and hunting for outlets. In Bali, I finished 7 projects but felt kinda isolated sitting in a quiet room with strangers. The coffee shops gave me more energy but my output was lower by about 40%. The coworking space boosted my productivity but killed my creativity for brainstorming. Which setup works better for you guys when you're trying to balance focus with feeling inspired?

My Bali coworking space wifi failure that cost me 3 days

I thought I could just show up to any cafe in Ubud and get good enough internet to do my video calls... turns out that was super wrong. The first week I was bouncing between three different spots and none of them could handle a Zoom meeting without dropping every 5 minutes. I finally caved and paid for a dedicated coworking membership at this place near the monkey forest, thinking it would be sorted in an afternoon. Nope, it took me a full 6 days to find a spot where I could actually work without frustration. The router in my bungalow was locked in the manager's office and he only unlocked it twice a day. Has anyone else dealt with Indonesia's wifi being way worse than the booking.com reviews let on?

Noticed it when I was looking for a place to work in Lisbon. Scrolled through the list. 50 different cafes, bars, libraries. Half of them probably don't even exist anymore. Weird milestone but it made me realize how much time I spend hunting for a solid table and outlet.

I spent three weeks in Lisbon last month working out of four different coworking spots. Every single one had the same problem - nobody respects quiet zones anymore. Three years ago in Medellin I booked this supposedly nice shared apartment with like 8 other digital nomads. On day two I went to make coffee at 7 AM and found someone's half eaten arepa sitting on the burner and a sink full of oily dishes. By day four the fridge smelled so bad I started keeping my yogurt in my room with a cold pack. The worst part was the guy who would cook fish at midnight and leave the pan to soak for two days. I lasted two weeks before I moved to a private studio for $150 more a month. Has anyone else had a shared kitchen experience that made you rethink your whole living setup?

Every time I see someone post about "the ultimate digital nomad hub" they're just describing a regular coworking space with fast wifi and some kombucha on tap. But the real thing that makes a place work for this life isn't the coffee or the desk setup. It's the community and the timing of when you show up. I learned this the hard way after spending 3 months in a "top rated nomad spot" in Bali where everyone left by 2pm and I was just sitting there alone by 3. Nobody talks about the actual rhythm of the place, like what time people actually hang around to chat or if there's a culture of staying late to work together.
