I swore I'd never carry a second laptop, then my only machine died in Medellin on a Tuesday
For two years I told everyone one laptop was the whole point of this life, and then mine just quit. It was a Tuesday morning in Medellin, I was three days from a deadline, and the thing would not turn on past the logo. I tried a hard reset, I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds, nothing. So I walked to a repair place near Parque Lleras and the guy told me the board was gone and it would take 8 days. Eight days! I ended up buying a cheap backup machine that same afternoon for $340, and it saved the whole gig. Here is the part that got me, that little backup has now been with me to four countries and it still runs. I was so sure a second laptop was dead weight in my bag. Now I want to hear from people who carry one anyway. What do you do when the only machine you own dies in a city where nobody has your parts?
