My laptop charger fried itself in a Chiang Mai cafe yesterday
Honestly, it just made a pop sound and died, leaving me at 12% battery. I had to rush to a mall and pay $45 for a new universal one that barely fits. Has anyone found a reliable travel charger that can handle different voltages without dying?

Why are we so quick to blame the charger? I've seen people plug into sketchy, loose outlets in cafes all the time. That pop sound could have been a power surge from the building's own wiring. A lot of travel adapters are actually pretty tough, but they can't save your gear from bad power. Maybe the real issue is checking the outlet before you plug in, not finding some magical charger.

That pop sound is the worst, I've had chargers die on me at the worst times too.

Yeah, checking the outlet first is key. I always give it a wiggle test now, skyler217, after my own charger died in a coffee shop. Saved me a few times since.

Gotta admit I was one of those people always blaming the charger first. But after having a phone die on me from a bad outlet in a diner, I'm starting to think you're right about checking the source.
