Overheard two nomads arguing about staying in one place for a full tax year
One said it's the only way to avoid a huge legal mess, but the other called it an outdated rule that limits real freedom, so what's your take on establishing a tax home versus staying truly mobile?

Define "truly mobile" though... does that mean never having a fixed address at all?

That's a tough one to pin down for sure. It probably looks different for everyone, honestly. For some people it just means home is wherever they park.

What about people who are mobile but still have a home base? Like @luna261, my friend is a travel nurse. She has an apartment she keeps her stuff in, but she's gone for months at a time living in different cities. Her home is that apartment address, but her life happens totally somewhere else. That feels like a different kind of mobile, not fully untethered but not settled either. It's like having a home port but sailing most of the year.
