PSA: the "just book a hostel and figure it out" advice cost me a client in Medellin
Everyone in this community loves to say you can just land somewhere with no plan and it always works out, and I think that advice is mostly bad. Two years back in Medellin I was sharing a hostel dorm with a guy named Devon, and he had a call with a US client at 8pm. Around 7:45 the wifi died, then the power cut for 40 minutes during a storm, and he ended up doing the whole call on his phone in a stairwell with a fan blowing in his face. He lost that client, about $3,000 of work, and he kept saying "it's fine, it's fine" but you could tell it wasn't. I moved into a $450 a month studio in Laureles a few days later and stopped rolling the dice. Having a real desk and a backup hotspot is not being scared, it's just not being a clown about your income. So for the folks who defend the no plan thing, what's your actual setup when the power goes out mid call?
