WiFi died during a client call in Chiang Mai, so I finished the pitch from a 7-Eleven parking lot
My Airbnb router gave out 10 minutes into a $600 project kickoff, so I grabbed my laptop, hotspot, and a bag of chips, sat on the curb outside the store at 2am local time, and closed the deal anyway, which has me wondering if anyone else keeps a written backup plan for their internet versus just trusting the listing photos.
Ugh, the locked hotspot thing is such a trap. Did you ever figure out if it was the carrier blocking it or just some setting buried in your phone? I'm asking because I'm about to buy a local SIM for a longer stay and I want to know what to test before I trust it for a real call, not just a quick speed check at the airport.
Have you checked whether your phone's hotspot actually works on the local SIM before you need it? I learned that one the hard way in Da Nang, because my carrier back home locked hotspot data unless I paid for a separate plan, so the backup I trusted for months was useless the one night I needed it. Now I keep a cheap local SIM in a drawer and test the hotspot for real before any client call, not just check that it shows up in the settings. Listing photos never tell you the upload speed anyway, just that the router looks nice on a shelf.
