Built a 12x16 shed floor with my dad over 3 weekends and the joist spacing math finally clicked
My dad asked me to help him build a shed in his backyard in Boise back in April, and I figured it would be a quick weekend thing. It turned into 3 weekends because we spent the first one just leveling the ground and setting the skids, which I did not expect to matter so much. He made me figure out the joist spacing myself with a pencil and a scrap of paper, and when I laid them 16 inches on center across 12 feet it came out to needing one more joist than I guessed. We used 2x8s for the floor frame and screwed down 3/4 inch plywood on top, and standing on it now with zero bounce feels way better than the wobbly deck I built at my old place. He kept saying measure from the same end every time or you'll drift, and sure enough my first two marks were off by almost half an inch before I switched. Curious if you all run rim joists first or hang the inner ones off a ledger when you're doing a freestanding floor like this?
