Built a shed base last week and learned a hard lesson about level ground

Tbh, I just eyeballed the spot in my yard and ended up digging out about 6 inches of dirt after the first corner was way off. Anyone got a better method for checking a big area before you start?

Just use a string line, man.

Forget the string line and check the actual framing with a laser level first. A string can sag or get bumped, giving you a false straight edge over a long wall. What if your starting point is already out of square?

Ever try a water level? It's cheap and super accurate over long distances. I made one with a hose and some clear tubing.

And honestly, @oscarb16's water level idea is the best bet for checking a big area before you even start digging. You just tape the clear tubing to a straight board at each corner and fill it with water, no batteries needed and it never lies about being level. I'd suggest marking the water line on each stake first before you touch a shovel, that way you know exactly how much dirt to remove or add in each spot. Really takes the guesswork out of it compared to a string that can move on you.
