Checked out a community workshop space in Philly, their dust collection setup is genius
I stopped by this maker space off Washington Ave last weekend and they rigged a dust collector with a cheap 4 inch hose and a big plastic funnel that sits right under the table saw. The thing catches like 90% of the sawdust before it hits the air, way better than my setup at home where everything ends up on my glasses. They also mounted a shop vac to the ceiling with a remote switch so you dont have to bend over to turn it on. I spent an hour watching their layout and stole like four ideas for my garage. Has anyone else visited a shared workshop and found a hack that made your own build space feel basic? How did you adapt it for a smaller room?

The funnel thing is smart but nobody ever talks about the noise trade off with those ceiling mounted vacs. You hang a shop vac up there and now the whole room turns into a drum, every board you cut sounds like it's inside a jet engine. I tried that setup in my basement and had to rip it out after a week because I couldn't hear my radio or my kid yelling for me from upstairs. What I ended up doing instead was building a little sound box out of scrap MDF and foam, stuck the vac inside it on the floor, and ran a longer hose so the noise stays tucked in the corner. Smaller rooms actually make this worse, not better, since there's less space for the sound to fade before it bounces back at you.
