Finally squared up a crooked workbench after 4 tries with shims at my dad's garage.
I was at my dad's garage last Saturday and after shimming that stupid leg for the fourth time I just clamped a level to the top and tightened the bolts while it sat on a flat piece of plywood, now it actually wobbles less than my neighbor's table saw... has anyone else found a trick that simple just by getting stuck somewhere?

That thing about clamping a level to the top is exactly the kind of hack that only comes from being totally fed up. I had a similar moment with a lawnmower blade that kept throwing off the deck. After three different wrenches and way too much cussing, I just wedged a 2x4 under the mower to hold the blade still while I tightened the nut. Worked perfect and I still do it that way. Sometimes the simplest fix is the one you find when you're about to give up and throw the whole thing in the trash.

Wedging a 2x4 is the kind of genius that comes from pure frustration.

...and honestly that level trick is basically the same thing I did with my table saw fence last month. I was getting so PISSED adjusting it over and over and finally just clamped a straight 2x4 to the blade side and used it as a reference to square the whole fence. Took five minutes instead of an hour of messing with shims. Sometimes the best solution really is just "stick something flat to it" and call it done. I still do the same thing with my miter saw when it drifts out of square after moving it around the garage.
