Sat down with a framer in Portland who said my plywood layout was wasting cuts
He showed me how he maps out full sheets before making a single saw cut, and I felt kind of dumb. I mean, I always just grabbed and cut as I went. Now I spend 15 extra minutes planning and save about half a sheet per job. Has anyone else had an old school guy change how you work?

Half a sheet per job? Wait hold up. That's not just a little savings, that's like a whole sheet every two jobs basically free. I gotta sit down and really think about how many sheets I've wasted over the years being lazy. Makes me want to go find that framer and buy him a beer just for yelling at you. Your wallet must be thanking you every time you cut now.

Man it's wild how this same principle shows up everywhere once you start looking. You see it in cooking where people toss out usable veggie scraps because they're lazy about trimming, or in woodworking where guys waste an inch of hardwood just because they don't plan their cuts first. It's like we all get stuck in this "good enough" mindset and forget that tiny savings stack up into something real over time. That framer probably learned that lesson the hard way too, maybe from someone else yelling at him back in the day. Once you train yourself to see it, you start catching yourself before you waste stuff and it feels almost like a superpower.

Man, that's painful but also kind of funny. I bet you felt about two inches tall when he dropped that knowledge on you. But hey, half a sheet per job adds up fast, that's real money in your pocket instead of the trash. I've had old timers show me stuff that made me want to hide my tool belt in shame, but you gotta respect the craft. At least now you're not just burning plywood for no reason, that's a win.
