That cheap stud finder let my shelf crash down at 2 AM
I used a $10 magnetic stud finder from the hardware store and it missed a drywall screw, not an actual stud. My whole bookshelf ripped out of the wall and smashed my desk setup. Has anyone else had a basic tool cause a bigger mess than it prevented?

Whoa wait, a magnetic one? Those things are basically just fridge magnets, I can't believe you trusted that with a whole shelf full of books.

Yeah "basically just fridge magnets" is pretty accurate honestly. I learned that lesson the hard way myself a few years back, thought I was being smart saving money until I hung a heavy mirror and it came crashing down two weeks later. A basic electronic stud finder is cheap enough that it's worth the upgrade, saved me a ton of headache since then.

Yeah "basically just fridge magnets" is exactly what I used to think too, honestly. I figured all stud finders were pretty much the same, just some plastic and a magnet, so why pay more? But after reading this I realize I was totally wrong. A cheap magnetic one is fine for finding a nail or screw head but it's not gonna tell you if that's actually holding a stud or just some random drywall screw. I'm rethinking my whole tool budget now, this is the kind of mistake that costs way more in the long run.
