TIL a single 2x4 cut at the wrong angle can ruin an entire shelf build

I measured twice but still cut my miter at 46 degrees instead of 44 on that pine shelving unit last weekend and had to scrap $12 worth of lumber before I finally clamped a guide block to keep the saw steady has anyone else messed up a simple cut that threw off everything?

Man I feel your pain on that 46 vs 44 degree cut. I did the same thing last month on a bookshelf and ended up with a 3 inch gap between the top shelf and the wall. The whole thing looked crooked no matter how I tried to shim it. Ended up tossing the whole piece and starting over with a fresh board. Most frustrating part was I had to wait a day to get more lumber from the hardware store.

Saw a woodworking blog say you can fix gaps with dutchmen or epoxy. Might be worth trying on the next f-up piece before trashing it.

Different take here, I don't scrap lumber that fast after one bad cut. You can usually trim both ends and salvage a shorter piece for another shelf or drawer side, only wasted a few inches instead of the whole board. Sucks about the gap but $12 of pine is pretty cheap compared to what you learn from that mistake lol.
