Just swapped my flat fee pitch for an hourly estimate and booked 3 of 5 clients last week
I used to send a flat price in the first email. Last month I tried a version that broke it into estimated hours at $85 an hour, with a note that we would adjust after the first week. Three of the five people I sent it to in Austin replied the same day, which never happened with the flat rate. One guy even said the hourly version made him feel like he could ask questions without getting nickel and dimed. Has anyone else had clients push back on hourly wording, or is that just a local thing?
The $85 an hour breakdown with that first-week adjustment note is smart. I've been doing flat quotes for years and got the same nickel and dime fear from clients, especially the smaller shops around Dallas. Last spring I switched to showing hours plus a cap so they know the worst case, and that helped a lot. So it's not just an Austin thing, pretty sure clients everywhere just want to feel like they can talk to you without a timer running.
