My follow up email had a typo that called a client 'Mr. Liver' and I still got the job
So I'm sitting at my kitchen table in Sacramento around 11pm on a Tuesday, rushing to send a follow up to a web design lead who'd gone quiet for 9 days. I'd built this whole template with merge fields and one of them pulled the wrong row, so the greeting said 'Hi Mr. Liver' instead of 'Mr. Rivera.' I didn't notice until the next morning when he replied with 'I'll assume that's a typo, but it did make me laugh.' Instead of apologizing five times, I wrote back one line: 'That's what I get for sending emails after my third cup of coffee, but the site mockups attached are typo free, I checked twice.' He booked a call that Friday and signed a $2,800 project two days later. Now I keep a '10pm rule' where anything going out after 9pm sits in drafts till morning, and I read every merge field out loud first. Honestly the typo did more for me than a perfect email would have, it made me sound like a real person. Has anyone else had a mistake in a pitch actually help you land the client, or does that only work once?
