The 6 AM phone call that killed my long email chains
I used to write these big, detailed follow-up emails with three paragraphs of context and bullet points, figured more info meant more trust. Then last Thursday I was on a job site in Arlington and my phone rang at 6 AM, a client asking if I'd even read her last message because she'd sent it twice and I replied with a wall of text that didn't answer her one question. I went back and looked at my sent folder, every single one of my last 14 emails had buried the actual ask somewhere in the middle. Now I lead with a one sentence answer, then add only what's needed, and I ask a direct question at the end. Has anyone else tried cutting their follow-ups down to under 100 words and seen a better reply rate?
