Vent: My "polite" follow-up was actually doing all the work for the client
For like two years I was sending those soft follow-ups, you know the ones: "Just checking in to see if you had any questions about my proposal." Last Tuesday a client replied after 11 days of silence with, "Oh sorry, I thought the ball was in your court since you didn't ask for the decision." That hit me. I was basically asking permission to be ignored and framing it as helpfulness. Turns out my template made me look unsure and put the burden on them to chase me. I rewrote it to say "I'll send over the contract tomorrow unless you have concerns by 5pm" and got a signed deal in 48 hours from a different client I'd been chasing for 3 weeks. Anyone else phrase their follow-ups so softly that clients read it as me not caring about the timeline?
