Dropped $600 on a gas auger that lasted 9 holes before quitting on me
Bought a used towable auger from a guy in Mesa off Craigslist for $600. Figured it would pay for itself on a 40 post job I had lined up. It dug 9 holes and then the gearbox just locked up on me. Had to rent a machine for $185 a day to finish, and the rental place said those units are known for that. If you see one listed cheap, ask when the gear oil was changed last, because mine clearly never was. Anyone else get burned buying used power tools, and did you fix it or cut your losses?
Did you check the gear oil yourself before buying it, or just take the seller's word? Those towable units run hot and if nobody ever topped off the gearbox, the bearings are already toast by the time you get it. Pull the drain plug and look for metal shavings, that tells you right away if it's worth fixing. On a $600 unit the rebuild kit plus labor usually runs close to what you paid, so unless you can do the work yourself, it's often better to walk away.
