Guy running a skid steer on a job in Boise said my post hole spacing was off by 6 inches, and it made me rethink how I lay out a line
Honestly I've been setting posts at 8 feet on center for years and never had a gate sag, so I figured it was fine. He walked my line last Tuesday and pointed out that on a 72 foot run I was eating an extra post and a half, which added up to about $85 in material. It hit different because he wasn't being a jerk about it, he just said 'you're paying for posts you don't need' and moved on. Now I'm second guessing my layout on every long run. Has anyone else changed their spacing and regretted it, or is 8 foot just the safe play?
Switched from 8 to 6 foot last year on a few runs and haven't had a single issue, gates still hang straight. That Boise guy was right, you're just burning money on posts you don't need.
