Had a gate hinge shear clean off on a job in Bellingham last Friday
It was a heavy cedar gate, maybe 200 pounds, on a windy day. The top hinge just snapped at the weld when the client swung it open. We had to prop the whole thing up with a couple of 4x4 posts while I ran to get a new heavy-duty set. Anyone have a go-to brand for hinges on big gates like that?

My cousin's gate in Ferndale flew clean off last spring.

People forget that a weld is a different, more brittle metal than the hinge itself. That's always the failure point.

Watching that hinge snap makes you realize how much we trust tiny bits of metal. My mailbox post bent over in a storm last month, and the latch on my old shed door gave out when I leaned on it. It feels like everything is built just strong enough to work on a calm day, but the first real test finds the weak spot. You start eyeing every hinge and bolt with a little more suspicion.

Ever see a weld just let go? Adam414 is right, that's the spot. Makes you second guess everything holding your house together.
