Just realized I stopped pre-drilling pickets with a nail, and my splits went from 5 a fence to zero
For years I tapped every cedar picket with a 6d nail first because my old boss in Wichita swore it stopped splits, but then a guy on a job near me in Wichita showed me his impact driver with a trim head screw and I gave it a shot on a 140 foot run back in March. I still get a split here and there on the knotty boards, but way less than the nail tap ever did, and it saves me about 20 minutes per section. Has anyone here gone back to the nail tap after trying screws, or am I missing something about cedar that makes it worth the extra step?
